As charities, nonprofits and public service programs struggle with government funding freezes, the spotlight shifts to those generous citizens who have taken it upon themselves to help others in need, often with little or no fanfare.
In 2006, I spent some time with two of those people, a Chittenden, Vermont married couple named Bob and “Teenie” Bearor.
In many ways, they lived an idiosyncratic life, obscuring the profound manner in which they lifted the spirits of countless strangers.
My visit culminated in a NBC TODAY story that resonates in these challenging times.
A recent internet search revealed that Bob Bearor died in 2019, his passing understatedly noted in a humble obituary.
He deserved a bigger send-off, so here is my version. I hope it inspires others to do what they can in this, or any other time of need.

Airborne carp have infiltrated a southern Illinois river and I was foolish enough to accept an invitation to “duck and cover” on my friend Jonah White’s boat.
Here is a brief preview.
